When we make a habit of prioritizing our own needs above all else\, it reinforces the illusion of a separate self. The spiritual journey is\, in essence\, a process of the self lessening so that the Divine may grow within us. Deep down\, we all long to be of true service\, to be put to good use—because giving from the heart brings real joy. Yet the pull of self-centeredness is strong and deeply ingrained. Thankfully\, life offers many natural opportunities for the diminishment of ‘I’—through parenting\, caregiving\, volunteering\, and other forms of service. However\, even in these\, the inner doer can persist\, resisting the surrender that allows giving to be truly selfless and unattached.
